I stumbled upon Observe and Report haphazardly. It’s a rare film-gem that has largely been passed on by mainstream popular culture. A few more movies by him, and I’m sure that writer/director Jody Hill will be a household name. So far, he has Foot Fist Way (2008) and Observe and Report (2009) in his young resume. The latter stars the popular Seth Rogan and is an exceptional Jody Hill film to start off with.
At first, I thought Jody Hill was a woman (because of the name) and was surprised at his deep knowledge of the male psyche. He portrays superbly the pathetic average American male with brutal honesty capturing through dark comedy the ultimate insecurity, overzealous masculinity, and sad, pressured, internalized lives of men that are not usually addressed in mainstream media. Seems bleak, but his films are synonymously extremely funny and revealing of the shell of male behavior. His films stand special even in the deluge of existing similar comedies (a la Seth Rogan films).
